The Canadian Nursery Certification Institute (CNCI) was created to help the nursery industry meet the need for industry-developed and delivered certification programs, in response to the ongoing threats posed by invasive and quarantine pests.  The immediate need for a certification institute was driven by the P. ramorum crisis faced by the nursery industry in British Columbia beginning in 2004. 

CNCI’s role is the administration of certification programs and provision of third party audits.  Program development is the responsibility of the industry, typically in cooperation with the national or provincial trade association.

The affairs of the CNCI are currently managed by a Board of Directors. Since 2008, support services have been provided by the BCLNA under a management contract to CNCI.
