Nursery Certification Programs

Nursery Certification Programs

The CNLA continues to work cooperatively with the Canadian Nursery Certification Institute (CNCI) in the development and administration of nursery certification programs including Clean Plants and P. ramorum certification.

The Canadian Nursery Certification Institute (CNCI) was founded in 2005.  Developed by industry, it is the overall mandate of CNCI to administer nursery certification programs in Canada. It is the role of CNCI to:

  • approve industry-developed certification programs
  • administer third-party audit and verification programs
  • provide technical review of Certification Manuals
  • provide technical review of audit reports
  • grant certification status, and
  • provide on-going maintenance and administrative services of all certification programs

At the current time, the CNCI manages two certification programs:

  • Clean Plants program, developed by the Canadian Nursery Landscape Association (CNLA). (formerly known as the Domestic Phytsosanitary Certification Program (DPCP).

Another nursery certification alternative available to the industry is the CFIA’s Canadian Nursery Certification Program.  This is also a systems-based program designed for nurseries that have significant export sales to the US.

Once a nursery has fulfilled all of the requirements for certification, the Canadian Nursery Certification Institute (CNCI) will grant that nursery certification in the Clean Plants program.
In response to the growing trend toward more industry self certification and toward systems based approaches to plant certification, a new independent industry body has been established in Canada.
During the fall and winter of 2005-06 the CLNA is administering a project, funded by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s ACAAF program, which will design a voluntary program for the certification of nurseries wishing to ship product domestically.
